Spooky Season Black Widow Cocktail

An original Halloween cocktail built around a quick homemade blackberry syrup, tart lime, vodka, and spicy ginger beer. The drink pours a deep, inky purple-black and gets a dramatic black-sugar rim, so it looks festive on a fall party table without specialty liqueurs or hard-to-find bar tools.

Instructions

  1. 1Combine 1 cup blackberries, the granulated sugar, and water in a small saucepan. Cook over medium heat, stirring and gently mashing the berries, until the sugar dissolves and the mixture is syrupy, 5 to 8 minutes.
  2. 2Strain through a fine-mesh sieve into a heatproof bowl, pressing on the solids to extract the liquid. Discard the solids and cool the blackberry syrup to room temperature.
  3. 3Rub a lime wedge around the rims of two rocks glasses, then dip the rims in black sanding sugar to coat.
  4. 4Fill a cocktail shaker halfway with ice. Add 3 ounces of the cooled blackberry syrup, the vodka, and the lime juice. Shake hard until the shaker is very cold, about 15 seconds.
  5. 5Fill the prepared glasses with ice and strain the shaken mixture evenly between them.
  6. 6Top each glass with about 1/2 cup ginger beer and stir once, gently.
  7. 7Garnish with whole blackberries and a lime wheel. Serve immediately.
